WhatsApp: Why 7.11 Million Indian Accounts Banned?

In September, WhatsApp took action against 7.11 million accounts in India, as reported in accordance with IT regulations. Out of these, 2.57 million accounts were proactively banned before any user reports were filed.

WhatsApp's official report for September 2023 reveals that between September 1st and September 30th, a total of 7,111,000 WhatsApp accounts were prohibited. Among these, 2,571,000 were banned proactively, prior to receiving any user reports.

This "user-safety report" provides insights into user complaints received and the actions taken by WhatsApp to ensure platform safety. During September, WhatsApp received six directives from the Grievance Appellate Committee, and they adhered to all of them.

In August, WhatsApp had previously banned 7.4 million accounts, with 3.5 million of them being proactively banned. These categories included account support (1,031), ban appeals (7,396), other support (1,518), product support (370), and safety (127).

The country code '+91' was used to identify Indian accounts, indicating that these actions were specific to India.

Accounts were either banned or restored based on the nature of the reported issues and their compliance with Indian laws and WhatsApp's Terms of Service.
